Internship Programme
A unique opportunity for pharmacists to gain hands-on, real-world experience within UK community pharmacy — one of the most clinically active and patient-facing settings in the NHS.
Community pharmacy in the UK sits at the very heart of primary care. It is often the first point of contact a patient has with a healthcare professional — making it one of the most dynamic, diverse, and rewarding environments for a pharmacist to develop in. Our UK community pharmacy internship is designed to give participants a genuine understanding of how community pharmacy operates within the NHS, the professional responsibilities involved, and the expanding clinical role pharmacists now hold on the high street and in GP-linked services.
Interns gain a thorough understanding of the NHS dispensing process — from receiving and clinically checking prescriptions to the accurate supply of medicines and labelling standards. This includes exposure to both paper and electronic prescriptions (EPS), controlled drug handling, and standard operating procedures that govern safe dispensing practice across the UK.
One of the most valuable aspects of UK community pharmacy is direct, unscheduled patient interaction. Interns observe and participate in medication counselling, advising patients on new medicines, managing repeat prescriptions, and supporting patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma — developing communication skills that are fundamental to safe pharmacy practice.
UK community pharmacies now deliver a broad range of NHS-commissioned services. Interns gain exposure to services such as the New Medicine Service (NMS), Discharge Medicines Service (DMS), Pharmacy First (minor illness consultations), blood pressure checks, NHS health checks, and smoking cessation clinics — reflecting the expanding clinical footprint of the community pharmacist.
Interns are introduced to the governance frameworks that underpin safe UK pharmacy practice — including near-miss incident reporting, standard operating procedures, GPhC standards, and the principles of clinical audit. Understanding how pharmacies maintain safety and quality is an essential component of professional development for any pharmacist working in or planning to work in the UK.
Community pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals in the UK. Interns develop confidence in triaging patient presentations at the counter — applying the WWHAM and other consultation frameworks to deliver appropriate over-the-counter (OTC) recommendations, make referral decisions, and promote self-care across a wide range of minor ailments.
Behind the scenes, community pharmacies operate as tightly managed medicines supply chains. Interns learn about stock ordering and management, cold chain compliance, expiry date monitoring, returns and waste disposal, and the importance of maintaining adequate stock levels — skills that are directly transferable across all pharmacy settings.
